US President Donald Trump has once again sparked controversy with comments about military operations, this time describing the US Navy as acting “like pirates" during maritime seizures linked to the ongoing Iran conflict.
Over the years, Trump’s remarks on war, soldiers and military strategy have repeatedly drawn criticism from political opponents, veterans and even defence officials. From joking about sinking enemy ships to questioning military oversight, many of his statements have triggered intense debate in the US and abroad.
Here are six of Trump’s most controversial military-related remarks:
1. Calling The US Navy “Pirates" (2026)
During comments about the US-led maritime blockade connected to the Iran conflict, Trump said American naval forces were behaving “like pirates" while intercepting ships in contested waters.
He also reportedly suggested that such seizures were “profitable", a remark that quickly generated backlash online and criticism from analysts who said it trivialised military operations and international law.
2. Saying It Was “More Fun To Sink Them"
While discussing encounters with Iranian naval vessels, Trump recounted a conversation in which sinking enemy ships was described as “more fun" than capturing them.
🚨 TRUMP : I was little upset that US military sank 46 Iranian ships instead of capturing them.“I asked, ‘what quality of ship?’
“Excellent Quality Ship Sir"
“I said We could’ve used it. Why did we sink them?"
“He said ‘Sir, It’s more fun to sink them.'"

Critics accused him of speaking casually about warfare and military violence, especially during a period of heightened tensions in West Asia.
3. The ‘Shoot Down And Destroy’ Order (2020)
In 2020, Trump publicly declared that he had instructed the US Navy to “shoot down and destroy" Iranian gunboats if they harassed American ships at sea.
The statement alarmed foreign policy experts and military observers, with some Pentagon officials later clarifying that military engagement decisions follow strict operational protocols and are not handled through public declarations alone.
4. Admitting Weapons Were ‘Lost’
Trump has at times openly acknowledged that US-supplied weapons in conflict zones were “lost" or could not be fully accounted for.
Opponents criticised the remarks as unusually candid and potentially damaging, arguing they raised concerns about military accountability and oversight of American arms transfers abroad.
5. ‘Losers’ And ‘Suckers’ Controversy
One of the biggest controversies surrounding Trump came after reports claimed he referred to fallen US soldiers as “losers" and “suckers" during a 2018 visit to France. Trump strongly denied the allegations.
Even before that controversy, he had faced backlash for mocking late senator and war veteran John McCain by saying: “I like people who weren’t captured."
The remarks drew condemnation from veterans’ groups and political leaders across party lines.
6. Claims The US Military Was ‘Weak’
Trump has repeatedly claimed that the US military was weakened or outdated before his presidency, often using the argument to justify increased defence spending and military expansion.
However, defence experts and military officials frequently pushed back on those claims, noting that the United States already possessed the world’s most advanced military capabilities.
Trump’s rhetoric on military matters has long been a defining feature of his political style — direct, confrontational and often controversial. Supporters view his comments as blunt honesty, while critics argue they risk undermining diplomatic norms, military professionalism and America’s global image.
