Facing pressure for a swift resolution, Trump repeatedly suggested the US military campaign in Iran may end soon amid ongoing oil market disruptions.

The White House has announced that US President Donald Trump will address the nation on Wednesday night on the Iran situation, a day after he indicated that the American campaign would end within two or three weeks.
Trump will address the nation at 9 pm ET (6:30 AM Indian time) on the Iran war, which has disrupted oil markets, international travel and global supply chains, pushing crude oil prices to more than $100 per barrel, becoming a political headache for Trump and his Republican Party ahead of the midterm elections in November.
However, there is still uncertainty about when the US-Israeli campaign will end, as the Trump administration has offered contradictory timelines and statements about the conclusion of the war amid reported divergences with Israel. Meanwhile, Iran has continued to attack facilities in neighbouring Gulf countries.

Another Deception In The Making?
Under pressure to end the war quickly, Trump has repeatedly hinted that the campaign would end soon. However, several broader US objectives, such as a regime change in Iran, remain unmet as the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corp (IRGC) asserted greater control after the killing of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
However, Trump’s shifting statements make him unreliable as he has previously displayed a disregard for diplomatic norms and protocol. His decision to attack Iran in the midst of negotiations over Tehran’s nuclear programme had damaged US credibility and raised questions about whether he was serious about striking a deal with Iran.
Even in June last year, Israel and later the US launched an attack on Iran just three days before Tehran and Washington were due to meet for a sixth set of talks. Trump has repeatedly asserted that Iran could not be allowed to develop a nuclear weapon, yet Oman – a mediator between the US and Iran – said Tehran had agreed to core principles for a deal with Washington, including zero stockpiles of highly enriched uranium.
Military Buildup Contradicts Trump’s Claims
While Trump has assured a quick end to the ongoing war, the massive US military buildup in West Asia has cast a shadow of uncertainty over the American campaign. Thousands of soldiers from the US Army’s elite 82nd Airborne Division have started arriving in the region, expanding Trump’s options to deal with Iran, including a possible raid on the Kharg Island.
The Trump administration has refused to rule out US ground forces playing a role in the conflict. Several US reports have suggested that the soldiers could be used for a limited ground operation to seize the Kharg Island, which is the hub for 90% of Iran’s oil exports. Such a move would mark a dramatic escalation in the war and is considered highly risky, as Iran can reach the island with missiles and drones.
While the US has also sought to release Iran’s chokehold on shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for global oil supplies, Trump has called on allies to take greater responsibility for securing energy supplies.
Political, Economic Pressures In US
Even as the world reels with the impact of disruptions in energy supplies, US citizens are also not immune from it. US gas prices have reached their highest level in years, putting American households under pressure amid already rising grocery bills, healthcare prices and electricity costs.
Gas prices in the US have already crossed $4 per gallon, the highest since 2022, and could possibly rise even higher. US farmers are also struggling with higher fertiliser costs, while increase in oil prices are also leading to increased air fares.
These issues could adversely impact Trump and the Republican Party in the upcoming midterm elections in November. A Reuters/Ipsos poll found that at least two-thirds of Americans want the US to end its involvement into the Iran war, even if it cannot achieve its goals. Sending troops on the ground in Iran is widely considered to be a political suicide, as it runs contrary to Trump’s ‘America First’ agenda.
