US President Donald Trump’s approval rating on the American economy has fallen to a new low amid declining support for his military campaign against Iran, as citizens are reeling under sky-high gas prices and growing household costs.

A CNN/SSRS poll released on April 1 found that 31% of Americans approve of how Trump is handling the economy, compared to 39% in January. The decline in approval on the issue is even higher among Republicans, according to CNN.

The poll, conducted March 26-30 among 1,201 US adults, found 35% approve of Trump’s job performance overall. It came as gas prices in the United States surpassed $4 per gallon on average, running contrary to the Trump administration’s promises to bring down costs before the war. The $4 per gallon milestone was last reached in August 2022 after Russia invaded Ukraine.

The CNN poll found that about two-thirds of Americans say Trump’s policies have worsened economic conditions, with 27% supporting Trump’s handling of inflation. At least 63% of Americans say the prices at the pump have caused financial hardship in their households.

“Everything is so expensive. Makes it very difficult to do anything other than work and go home. Trips to the grocery store are ridiculous! Between gas and grocery prices, we are poor," a respondent told CNN.

Prices for crude oil used to make gasoline have also surged, along with prices for many goods, since Iran blocked most shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. This dealt a blow to US households already struggling with rising costs even before gasoline prices started to rise.

Declining support for Trump’s Iran War

Recent polls have shown that most Americans oppose US involvement in the Iran war, with a Reuters/Ipsos poll showing that 66% of Americans seek a US pullout, even if it means not achieving the goals set out by the Trump administration.

The month-long war has spread across the Gulf region, hitting the global economy with soaring energy prices, fuelling global inflation fears. A total of 60% of respondents said they disapproved of US military strikes on Iran, while 35% approved in the survey of 1,021 people, as per Reuters.

A University of Massachusetts Amherst poll released on March 30 showed that Trump only enjoyed 33% approval, while the New York Times revealed on April 2 that Trump’s approval rating had fallen lower than that of his predecessor Joe Biden.

On March 26, a Fox News poll showed Trump’s approval rating at 41%, with 59% of registered voters disapproving of his job performance, the highest disapproval recorded across both of his terms. Notably, former US President George W Bush left office in January 2009 with a job approval rating of about 34%, one of the lowest for a departing US president at the time.
