US President Donald Trump has said negotiations with Iran are moving towards a possible agreement, while making clear that any deal must guarantee that Tehran does not acquire nuclear weapons.
Speaking to Fox News on Saturday in an interview with Lara Trump, Trump said discussions were progressing, though no final agreement had yet been reached.
“The one guarantee that I have to have is that there will be no nuclear weapons, they’ve agreed to that," Trump said.
‘We’re close to a very good deal’
Trump expressed optimism about the ongoing negotiations and suggested that patience was necessary to secure an acceptable outcome. “We’re close to a very good deal," he said.
“If you’re going to be in a hurry, you’re not going to make a good deal, and slowly but surely, we’re getting, I think, what we want — and if we don’t get what we want, we’re going to end it a different way."
His remarks come as efforts continue to reach a diplomatic arrangement with Iran following months of tensions and conflict.
Trump says Iran’s military was largely spared
During the interview, Trump said the United States had deliberately avoided targeting Iran’s military as aggressively as other parts of the country’s leadership and military infrastructure.
According to Trump, Washington chose a different approach because it viewed sections of Iran’s military as comparatively moderate.
“Their navy is totally gone, 100%. Their air force is totally gone, 100%. Their military, we sort of left it alone, because we think that their military is somewhat, somewhat moderate," he said.
Trump added that eliminating every part of a country’s structure could have long-term consequences.
“We’ve taken different forms of leadership out, we’ve actually left their military alone. People would be surprised to hear that, because mistakes have been made in wars where you wipe out everybody, and then you have a country that’s, you know, for 40 years can never rebuild. You look at what happened with Iraq," he said.
Trump’s criticism of media
The US president also criticised sections of the American media, claiming that they downplay US achievements. Trump said Iran’s “biggest asset" was what he described as the “fake news media".
“You have a big win in a battle, and they say you lost. It’s just a terrible thing for our country," he said.
He argued that media organisations often portray events in a way that diminishes American successes.
“You knock out the entire navy and they say their navy is doing fantastically. You need a fair media. We don’t have a fair media. All they can do is lie," Trump said.
Meanwhile, the United States has not yet achieved a breakthrough in negotiations with Iran despite a two-hour meeting at the White House on Friday. Amid the ongoing talks, a White House official said President Donald Trump will not sign any agreement with Tehran unless it is “good for America" and meets his red lines.
The remarks came even as Trump on Friday said he would make a “final determination" on a possible deal to end the conflict, while Iranian officials insisted that no final understanding has yet been reached.
