Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio are among the senior figures named to a new “Board of Peace" that will supervise the reconstruction of Gaza.
The board has been set up as part of a United Nations-backed US plan to demilitarise and rebuild Gaza after two years of devastating conflict between Israel and the Hamas militant group. The panel will be chaired by US President Donald Trump.
According to a White House statement issued on Friday, the founding executive board also includes Trump’s foreign policy envoy Steve Witkoff, deputy national security adviser Robert Gabriel and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner.
Billionaire investor Marc Rowan and World Bank President Ajay Banga are also members. More names are expected to be added later. A Canadian government official confirmed that Prime Minister Carney had accepted the invitation to join the board.
Before the list of members was released, Trump described the panel as “the Greatest and Most Prestigious Board ever assembled" in a social media post announcing its formation on Thursday.
The White House said each member will be assigned a specific role that is “critical to Gaza’s stabilization and long-term success".
Notably, the board does not include any representative from the Palestinian Authority, which governs parts of the occupied West Bank and is expected to eventually take control of Gaza following reforms. Blair’s inclusion has drawn attention. He served as British prime minister until 2007 and supported the US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003.
His later role as a Middle East envoy for the Quartet led to criticism from Palestinians, who viewed him as too close to Israel. Governance plan for Gaza.
Under the US proposal, day-to-day administration of Gaza will be handled by a separate Palestinian technocratic committee made up of 15 members. The committee will be led by Dr Ali Sha’ath, a Gaza-born Palestinian who previously held senior roles in the Palestinian Authority.
The White House said the group will focus on restoring basic services and rebuilding institutions to stabilise life in Gaza. Former UN Middle East peace envoy Nickolay Mladenov has been appointed as the high representative for Gaza under the plan. The technocratic committee is expected to run Gaza until a reformed Palestinian Authority is able to take over.
The proposal says this could eventually open a “credible path to Palestinian self-determination and statehood". Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has opposed any role for the Palestinian Authority in Gaza and rejects the idea of a Palestinian state.
Israel had effective veto power over the committee’s composition, insisting that no members of Hamas or the Palestinian Authority be included. An Israeli official said the Shin Bet security agency approved all 15 names. In addition, a separate Gaza executive board has been created to support governance.
It includes officials from Turkey, Qatar, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates, along with members from the Board of Peace and the technocratic committee.
