Speaking Monday at a White House faith luncheon, President Donald Trump heaped praise on the tax bill he signed into law earlier this month after successfully pressuring enough Republican holdouts to change their votes.
Trump took time out of a set of remarks ostensibly about the importance of faith to discuss his biggest legislative achievement to date, a package that has been shown to disproportionately benefit the wealthy.
He also made a couple jokes at his supporters’ expense.
Trump began by slamming the Republicans who dared oppose the massive piece of legislation on behalf of their constituents. He bragged about making a series of late-night, early-morning calls to the holdouts, only to be reassured that each representative would fall in line.
“Really, they’re grandstanders,” Trump called the bill’s GOP detractors, saying that certain people “make you suffer.” He appeared to restrain himself from naming too many names, although he did call out Utah Republican Mitt Romney, who left the Senate last year.
“They make it so hard,” Trump said. “And the alternative is one of two things: You can either get all these things and make the economy strong, or you’re going to literally have perhaps a depression, where you people — so rich, so beautiful, so nice to look at — will be totally busted,” Trump said.
He went on: “And let’s see how long your wife stays with you. You’re beautiful. She’ll stay with you for about three weeks, and she’ll say, ‘Darling, I can’t take it anymore. I can’t take it anymore, darling. I’m leaving you.’”
The faith luncheon attendees burst into laughter.
Trump added that during deliberations over the big bill, he told a wealthy yet “very, very unattractive” friend, “You better hope we get this thing passed, ’cause your wife will be gone in two minutes.”
