A massive 8.8 magnitude earthquake hit Russia on Wednesday morning, triggering tsunami warnings, has raised concerns in other regions located near the Pacific.

Tsunami Alert in Pacific After Russia Earthquake
A powerful earthquake of magnitude 8.8, the strongest since 1952, struck off Russia’s Far Eastern Kamchatka Peninsula and Japan on Wednesday, generating a tsunami of up to 4 metres (13 feet).
In Russia, a tsunami with a height of 3-4 metres was recorded in parts of Kamchatka in Sergei Lebedev. Meanwhile, the Japan Meteorological Agency said a tsunami measuring 40 centimeters was detected in Tokachi, on the southern coast of Hokkaido, the northernmost of the country’s main islands.
Tsunami waves have flooded part of the Russian port town of Severo-Kurilsk, according to Russia’s emergencies ministry. Videos circulating on social media appear to show water surging inland near the town.
A massive 8.8 magnitude earthquake that struck off Russia’s far eastern coast and Japan’s Tokachi, triggering tsunami warnings, has also raised concerns in other regions located near the Pacific. Tsunami warnings have been issued for several countries along with Pacific Ocean coastlines.
US At Risk After Russia Earthquake
Hawaii in the US is also under a tsunami watch, which was issued at 1.33 pm Hawaii Standard Time (HST) on Tuesday. Officials in Hawaii have ordered an “immediate evacuation" of large parts the island Oahu, including the state capital Honolulu.
The Alaska-based National Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami warning for parts of the Aleutian Islands and the US West Coast, including California, Oregon, and Washington. Oregon is under a tsunami advisory, along with much of the West Coast spanning Canada’s British Columbia province, Washington state and California.
Philippine Authorities Warn Of Possible Threat
The Philippine authorities has also warned provinces and towns along the archipelago’s eastern coast facing the Pacific of possible tsunami waves of less than 1 meter. The authorities have advised people to stay away from the beach and coastal areas.
New Zealand Issues Aert
New Zealand authorities issued warnings of “strong and unusual currents and unpredictable surges" along coastlines throughout the country.
The government emergency management agency said people should move out of the water, off beaches and shore areas, and away from harbors, marinas, rivers and estuaries.
Waves Could Strike Ecuador
Tsunami wave of three-metre could hit Ecuador following the tremor, according to the US Tsunami warning center.
