Two Indian nationals were shot dead in Italy’s Covo, located in the Bergamo province, shortly after attending a gathering linked to the Vaisakhi festival, local media reported on Sunday.
The incident took place late Friday night, just minutes before midnight, in the square outside a warehouse being used as a place of worship, the Gurdwara Mata Sahib Kaur Ji, situated in the industrial area of the town.
Italian newspaper La Sicilia reported that the victims had just exited the premises when the attack occurred.
The deceased were identified as 48-year-old Raginder Singh, a resident of Covo, and 48-year-old Gurmit Singh, who lived in Agnadello.
Both men had been present at the religious gathering linked to the Vaisakhi celebrations before the fatal shooting took place.
According to news agency PTI, the attacker allegedly approached the victims, opened fire, and then fled the scene in a car.
Authorities later recovered approximately 10 shell casings from the site, indicating the intensity of the shooting.
INVESTIGATORS PROBE POSSIBILITY OF PLANNED EXECUTION
Initial findings have ruled out the possibility of a sudden altercation escalating into violence.
Investigators were examining the theory that the incident may have been a “coldly planned execution," as per local media reports.
A witness was quoted as telling reporters that the suspected shooter was “an Indian" who was also known to visit the gurdwara.
The same witness said that a third individual was also struck by gunfire, with bullets reportedly grazing the person during the attack.
The shooting occurred just ahead of an official Vaisakhi celebration that had been scheduled for Saturday in the nearby area, with participation expected from local institutions.
Authorities were continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the killings, while the motive behind the attack remained unclear.
