Amid the ongoing tension in West Asia, Iran has agreed to allow 20 Pakistani-flagged vessels to transit the Strait of Hormuz, said Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar.
Describing the move as a significant step towards easing one of the worst energy crises in the modern world, Dar said this step will be a “harbinger of peace" amid ongoing regional tensions.
“I am pleased to share great news: the Government of Iran has agreed to allow 20 more ships under the Pakistani flag to pass through the Strait of Hormuz; two ships will cross the Strait daily," said the Pakistani Foreign Minister on X.
“This is a welcome and constructive gesture by Iran and deserves appreciation. It is a harbinger of peace and will help usher stability in the region," he wrote, adding, “This positive announcement marks a meaningful step toward peace and will strengthen our collective efforts in that direction."
“Dialogue, diplomacy, and such confidence-building measures are the only way forward," Dar added.
The decision comes at a time when shipping through the narrow chokepoint has been severely restricted amid the Iran-US-Israel conflict, effectively paralysing maritime movement and disrupting global energy supplies.
According to a report by Reuters, Dar held a telephone conversation with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi, during which he emphasised the need for de-escalation, dialogue and diplomacy to ensure lasting peace.
Amid the conflict, Pakistan has positioned itself as a key intermediary between Washington and Tehran. Earlier, US special envoy Steve Witkoff confirmed that Islamabad has been facilitating communication between the two sides.
Tehran has permitted several Pakistan-linked ships
This, however, isn’t the first time that Tehran has agreed to such transit, as earlier too, the Iranian regime had allowed the passage of several Pakistan-linked vessels through the strait.
The Strait of Hormuz has been effectively closed since early March following the escalation of the US-Israeli war with Iran on February 28.
Strait of Hormuz open for friendly nations only
Iranian authorities had earlier hinted that Iran would not fully close the Strait of Hormuz and would allow safe passage to vessels from countries it considers friendly, including India, Russia, China, Pakistan and Iraq.
Earlier, Araghchi said that Iranian forces have facilitated passage selectively and noted that vessels linked to the United States, Israel and certain Gulf countries involved in the ongoing conflict would not be granted access through the key maritime route.
