A Ukrainian military technology company has claimed a record-breaking interception of Russian Shahed-type drones from a distance of up to 500 km, marking a significant leap in long-range drone warfare amid the ongoing conflict with Russia.

The claim was made by Tenebris, a Ukrainian drone manufacturer, whose chief executive Bohdan Velma said the achievement reflects the rapid evolution of unmanned aerial warfare in Ukraine.

The company’s interceptor drone, known as “Bagnet" (Bayonet), was developed to counter Iranian-designed Shahed drones extensively used by Moscow to strike Ukrainian cities.

According to Velma, the interceptor was piloted remotely from Kyiv, while the Russian drone was destroyed hundreds of kilometres away, underscoring the growing ability of Ukrainian forces to neutralise aerial threats without exposing operators near the frontline.

Ukraine has increasingly relied on unmanned systems as Russian attacks intensify and air-defence missile stocks remain limited.

Ukrainian military chief Oleksandr Syrsky has said that as of March, drones accounted for nearly 70 per cent of Russian UAVs shot down in the Kyiv region.

Early interceptor drones were constrained by limited range and radio-based controls, forcing operators to remain close to combat zones.

Ukrainian companies have since upgraded systems to operate via secure internet links, allowing pilots to control drones from far behind the frontlines, and even from outside the country.

Wild Hornets, another Ukrainian drone maker, said this month that one of its “Sting" interceptors, guided by a pilot stationed in Kyiv, had downed two Shahed-type drones about 500 km away.

In a separate test, the company claimed a successful flight in northern Ukraine controlled by a pilot located roughly 2,000 km outside the country. Presidential adviser Oleksandr Kamyshin said the development showed that “distance is no longer a limitation".

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said production of interceptor drones has now surpassed the availability of trained pilots, prompting a shift toward fewer but highly skilled operators managing multiple launch systems remotely.

Defence officials say long-distance piloting could ease Ukraine’s manpower shortages and reduce casualties among drone crews, who are frequently targeted by Russian strikes. At the same time, Ukraine is also establishing specialised units to track and target Russian drone operators.

Russia, meanwhile, has also used satellite internet systems to guide drones inside Ukraine, prompting Kyiv to seek restrictions on unauthorised usage earlier this year.

Despite technological advances, analysts caution that interceptor drones are only one layer of Ukraine’s air-defence network.

Recent Russian attacks involving hundreds of drones at a time have overwhelmed defences, while ballistic missiles continue to pose a challenge due to shortages of advanced interceptors.
