The US airman whose fighter jet was shot down by Iran and was left stranded in the country had to establish contact with American forces and prove his identity before a high-risk rescue mission could proceed, a US official told Reuters.

The airman, a weapons systems operator aboard an F-15E fighter jet, had ejected over Iran after the aircraft was hit by air defences. Separated from his pilot, who was rescued earlier, he was left stranded behind enemy lines.

Despite a sprained ankle, the airman made his way across rugged terrain and hid in a crevice on a remote hilltop. With limited cover and mounting risk of discovery, he eventually managed to establish contact with the US military.

According to Reuters, the airman “established contact" and “authenticated himself" — a critical step before any rescue could be launched. Such verification is essential in hostile environments to ensure that rescue teams are not being lured into a trap by enemy forces.

US air crews undergo Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape (SERE) training, which prepares them to evade capture and communicate securely if downed. These protocols include coded methods of identification designed to confirm authenticity under extreme conditions.

Only after the airman’s identity was verified did US commanders move ahead with the operation.
