The US-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) on Wednesday accused Hamas militants of launching a deadly attack on one of its staff buses, killing at least five aid workers and injuring several others.

According to a statement released by the group, the assault occurred around 10 pm local time, when a bus carrying over two dozen GHF team members was en route to a distribution centre. The group said it feared some staff may have been taken hostage.

According to an AFP report, the organization confirmed that all the passengers on board were Palestinian aid workers. The attack occurred as they travelled west of Khan Younis toward the foundation’s aid hub. “We condemn this heinous and deliberate attack in the strongest possible terms," GHF said in its statement, describing the victims as “humanitarians… risking their lives every day to help others."

GHF, a privately-run and US-supported initiative with reported backing from Israel, began operations on May 26 after Israel halted aid into Gaza for over two months, prompting famine warnings. While the group claimed to have distributed over seven million meals in its first week, it has faced mounting criticism.

Allegations emerged that the Israeli military fired at civilians collecting aid near GHF sites—claims denied by both Israeli officials and the foundation, which employs US-contracted security. Major humanitarian groups and the United Nations have declined to work with GHF, raising concerns that its operations align with Israeli military interests.
