US Boy Born At 21 Weeks Sets Record As World's Most Premature Baby

A baby boy born in the United States has made history by becoming the most premature baby ever to survive. Nash Keen, born in Iowa City on July 5, 2024, arrived after just 21 weeks in the womb—133 days before his due date. Weighing only 10 ounces (about the size of a soda can), Nash has now officially been recognized by Guinness World Records (GWS) for this incredible milestone, beating the previous record by just one day.

Nicknamed “Nash Potato," the tiny newborn spent six months in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital. He finally went home with his parents, Mollie and Randall Keen, in January 2025.

“It honestly feels unreal," said Mollie. “A year ago, we didn’t know what the future would look like, and now here we are—he just turned one," Mollie was quoted by GWS in its report. She said it’s been an emotional journey filled with pride, hope, and even sadness at times, but mostly a feeling of triumph. “It’s not just a birthday—it’s a celebration of everything he’s overcome."

When Nash was born, he weighed only 285 grams and was just 24 centimeters long—smaller than a grapefruit. Mollie shared that she had been waiting for weeks to finally hold her baby. “He was so tiny, covered in wires, and I was nervous," she said. “But when I finally had him on my chest, all the fear faded. It felt like pure love."

Nash was born after Mollie’s 20-week pregnancy check-up revealed she was already starting to go into labor. Just a few days later, he was born. The first few days were incredibly difficult. “It was all a blur—machines, doctors, and a lot of uncertainty. But even then, we could see that he was fighting."

Since leaving the hospital, Nash has continued to grow stronger. He still needs oxygen, a feeding tube, and hearing aids, and he attends a special daycare where he receives therapy and medical care. His progress is closely watched by his doctors in Iowa City.

“Nash isn’t just breaking records—he’s capturing hearts," said Mollie. “He’s a little star in our community and beyond. His story gives hope to so many."
