The US Justice Department on Friday released a massive new tranche of records linked to late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, making public millions of pages of documents, videos and images as part of a transparency drive mandated by law.
Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche said the department published more than 3 million pages of documents, along with over 2,000 videos and 180,000 images, marking the latest and largest disclosure related to the Epstein investigation. The files were uploaded to the department’s website and include records that had been withheld from an initial release in December.
The disclosure was carried out under the Epstein Files Transparency Act, legislation passed after months of bipartisan political and public pressure that compels the government to open its files on Epstein and his longtime associate and former girlfriend, Ghislaine Maxwell.
“Today’s release marks the end of a very comprehensive document identification and review process to ensure transparency to the American people and full compliance with the act," Blanche said at a news conference.
At the end of last year, the Justice Department had said it still had more than five million pages left to review and had reassigned hundreds of lawyers to the task. The pace of disclosure drew sharp criticism from some members of Congress, who accused the administration of dragging its feet and violating the spirit of the law.
Former President Donald Trump, who was socially acquainted with Epstein in the 1990s and early 2000s before later falling out with him, had initially opposed releasing the files. However, both Democrats and Republicans in Congress pushed the legislation through despite his objections. Trump has never been formally accused of wrongdoing in connection with Epstein and has repeatedly denied any knowledge of his crimes.
Addressing speculation that powerful figures were shielded, Blanche said the department did not protect anyone in the release. “We complied with the statute and the act," he told reporters. “We did not protect President Trump. We didn’t protect or not protect anybody."
Blanche also rejected claims that the Justice Department was concealing a so-called “Epstein client list."
“There’s a built-in assumption that there’s some hidden tranche of names that we’re covering up or choosing not to prosecute. That is not the case," he said.
He added that while authorities would pursue any credible evidence of abuse if it emerges, he does not expect the newly released files to reveal undisclosed lists of perpetrators. “If we learn about information that allows us to prosecute, we will," Blanche said. “But I don’t think the public will uncover new abusers simply by going through these files."
The law allows limited redactions to protect victims and safeguard ongoing investigations, but lawmakers have complained that many of the documents released so far remain heavily redacted, adding to ongoing frustration over the disclosures.
