French President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday said the United States can no longer be seen as a fully dependable ally, as he called for Europe to step up in an increasingly unstable global order.
Speaking in Athens alongside Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Macron said growing uncertainty around traditional alliances underscores the need for stronger European autonomy.
“Everybody sees that the number one power, the US, could be an ally for certain countries, but this ally is not so much certain and nobody is totally sure if this ally is reliable," Macron said.
He described the current geopolitical environment as a “world of disorder," arguing that shifting power dynamics and ongoing conflicts have exposed vulnerabilities in long-standing security arrangements.
Macron reiterated his long-standing push for a more self-reliant European Union, particularly in defence and strategic decision-making. He said the present moment offers Europe an opportunity to assert itself on the global stage.
“I think this very moment could be the European moment," he added.
The remarks come amid heightened tensions in multiple regions, including the war in Ukraine and instability in the Middle East, as well as ongoing debates within Europe over defence spending and reliance on NATO.
Macron’s comments are likely to resonate across European capitals, where leaders are increasingly weighing how to balance transatlantic ties with a push for greater independence in security and foreign policy.
