US has not conducted a military draft since the Vietnam War era and automatic registration does not itself mean a draft is imminent.

The US Congress greenlighted the move last December as part of the 2026 National Defense Authorization Act.
The US government is moving to automatically register eligible men for a potential military draft. The Selective Service System (SSS) submitted a proposed rule change on March 30 to the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs that would allow the agency to register draft-eligible men automatically by pulling from existing federal data sources rather than requiring individuals to sign up themselves. The change is set to take effect by December 2026.
“This statutory change transfers responsibility for registration from individual men to SSS through integration with federal data sources," the agency said on its website, adding that the shift will result in “a streamlined registration process and corresponding workforce realignment."

The US Congress greenlighted the move last December as part of the 2026 National Defense Authorization Act- the annual must-pass bill that authorizes funding for military personnel and operations.
What Law Currently Requires?
Under existing federal law, most males between the ages of 18 and 25 are required to register with the Selective Service System in the event Congress ever authorizes a military draft. Men are expected to register within 30 days of turning 18, though the agency accepts late registrations up to age 26. Failure to register carries serious consequences. It is a federal felony punishable by a fine of up to $250,000 or up to five years in prison. Non-registrants can also be denied federal student loans, government employment at the federal, state and local levels. Despite penalties, registration rates have been slipping. The SSS reported to Congress in 2024 that the share of eligible men who registered dropped from 84% in 2023 to 81% the following year.

The approach is already familiar in much of the country. Forty-six states and territories currently have laws that automatically register eligible men when they apply for a driver’s license or state ID. The new federal rule would extend that principle nationwide through direct integration with federal databases.
