The United States will be shutting down Iranian airlines’ access to landing spots, refuelling and selling of tickets, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Thursday, adding that sanctions have been imposed on Iran’s maritime authority.

In a post on X, Bessent said, “The US Treasury continues our Economic Fury campaign against the Iranian regime. Their troops are not getting paid, the police are not reporting for work, and Kharg Island is shut down. The Iranian economy and currency are in free fall."

While calling Iran’s Persian Gulf Strait Authority (PGSA) a “joke", he said: “…today Treasury has sanctioned it. We have warned any corporate or state entities against paying tolls or hiding them as aid payments."

“Forming a Wall of Steel, the U.S. Naval Blockade has ensured a record low amount of Iranian crude on the water. We will also be shutting down both Iranian airlines’ access to landing spots, refueling, and ticket sales. Only a satisfactory outcome in negotiations will end the downward spiral," he added.

Tensions between the United States and Iran escalated further as senior Iranian officials rejected key American demands in ongoing indirect truce negotiations, while US President Donald Trump intensified pressure on Tehran over the future of the Strait of Hormuz and Iran’s nuclear programme.

Trump reiterated that Washington would not allow any country to dominate the vital maritime corridor of the Strait of Hormuz. “The Strait is going to be open to everybody. It’s international waters. We’ll watch over it, but nobody’s going to control it," the US President said while speaking to reporters.

On May 6, Iran’s top security council announced the formation of a new body – the Persian Gulf Strait Authority (PGSA) – to manage the vital Strait of Hormuz.

Iran’s Supreme National Security Council announced that it would provide “real‑time updates on the #Hormuz_Strait operations and latest developments."
