The United States is considering deploying thousands of American troops to reinforce its operations against Iran in West Asia, as President Donald Trump is weighing additional options, including securing safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz, according to a report.

The US military is preparing for possible next steps in its campaign against Iran as Trump weighs expanding operations with the war approaching the four-week mark, a US official and three people familiar with the matter told Reuters.

Trump is considering several options, including providing safe passage for oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz, which would be accomplished primarily through air and naval forces, as per the sources. Securing the waterway could also mean deploying US troops to Iran’s shoreline, as per the report.

Will US Deploy Troops In Iran?

The Trump administration has also discussed options to send ground forces to Iran’s Kharg Island, which contains 90% of Iran’s oil exports, three people familiar with the matter and three US officials told Reuters. One of the officials said such an operation would be very risky as Iran can reach the island with missiles and drones.

However, any use of US ground troops could pose significant political risks for Trump, given low support among the American public for the Iran campaign and Trump’s own campaign promises to avoid entangling the US in other conflicts.
