US Wishes Pakistan On Independence Day, Appreciates 'Engagement On Counterterrorism'

Rubio's wish came after an uptick in relations between the US and Pakistan, after Washington designated the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) as a foreign terrorist organisation.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio extended congratulations to Pakistan as the country celebrates its Independence Day on August 14 (Thursday), saying the United States “deeply appreciates Pakistan’s engagement on counterterrorism".

“On behalf of the United States, I extend our warm congratulations to the people of Pakistan as they celebrate their Independence Day on August 14. The United States deeply appreciates Pakistan’s engagement on counterterrorism and trade," Rubio said in a statement.

“We look forward to exploring new areas of economic cooperation, including critical minerals and hydrocarbons, and fostering dynamic business partnerships which will promote a prosperous future for Americans and Pakistanis."

Pakistan observes its Independence Day on August 14, marking the day in 1947 when it was created as a separate nation for Muslims after the partition of British India.

US-Pakistan Relations

Relations between the US and Pakistan are seemingly on the rise, after Washington designated the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) and its alias, the Majeed Brigade, as foreign terrorist organisations. The announcement coincided with Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir’s second visit to the US.

The US has also committed to investing in Pakistan’s energy and mineral mining sectors, as the two countries reached a trade deal that allows Washington to help develop Pakistan’s oil reserves and lower tariffs for the country.

Pakistan and the US also held a counterterrorism dialogue in Islamabad recently, even though India put out strong evidence of the Pakistani link to the Pahalgam attack terrorists in front of the world.

US President Donald Trump has been claiming that he used trade as a tool to convince both warring nations to agree to a ceasefire. However, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s made it clear in the Parliament that there was no third-party intervention, setting the record straight on India-Pakistan military conflict.

There have been concerns in India over the US giving a platform to Munir to make nuclear threats after he recently said Pakistan “would take half of the world down", and the silence of the US State Department shows the country is refusing to take onus on the matter.
