Venezuela has played down talk of foreign travel by interim president Delcy Rodríguez, even as earlier reports said she had sought permission for a possible visit to Washington.

The Venezuelan government said on Friday that interim president Delcy Rodríguez has no plans to travel abroad in the near future, responding to reports that suggested a possible visit to Colombia.

The clarification comes amid earlier reports that Rodríguez had sought permission to travel to Washington next Tuesday, a trip that could include a possible visit to the White House.

That request, according to the report, was under preliminary review and would require a temporary sanctions waiver from the US Treasury, as Rodríguez is sanctioned by the United States for human rights abuses.

Earlier, Colombian President Gustavo Petro had also indicated that Rodríguez could soon travel to Bogotá for talks. However, Venezuelan officials moved quickly to play down the suggestion.

Communications Minister Freddy Ñañez said the interim president’s administration is currently concentrating on internal matters. In a message shared on Telegram, he said the government is “focused as a government on the domestic agenda."

Petro had earlier told Spanish newspaper El Pais that Rodríguez was expected to visit the Colombian capital in the coming weeks. Explaining the timeline, he said, “She has asked for two weeks. She needs to see what is happening in her own country," Petro was quoted as saying.

For now, Caracas has made it clear that no international travel by the interim president is scheduled, as the government keeps its attention firmly on issues at home.
