Violent Turbulence Hits Ryanair Flight In Germany Prompting Emergency Landing, 9 Injured

A Ryanair flight en route to Milan was forced to make an emergency landing in southern Germany on Wednesday night after encountering heavy turbulence from a thunderstorm, the police said.

The aircraft, which departed from Berlin, landed safely in Memmingen, around 115 kilometres west of Munich, after the pilot initiated the emergency landing due to worsening weather conditions.

The police said that nine people—eight passengers and one crew member— were injured during the descent.

Though the aircraft landed safely, nine passengers, ranging in age from two to 59, sustained injuries. A woman suffered a head injury, her two-year-old child received bruises, and a 59-year-old woman reported back pain. All three were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

One passenger told local media the turbulence was so violent they feared the aircraft would “break apart".

Ryanair said in a statement on Thursday that the flight’s captain had requested medical assistance ahead of landing.

The airline, which apologised to those affected, said it provided a bus service from Memmingen to Milan late on Wednesday as well as a replacement flight early on Thursday.
