'We Belong Together': Marco Rubio Calls Europe A 'Friend’ At Munich Conference

Marco Rubio at the Munich Security Conference stressed US Europe unity, urged Europe to boost defense, discussed Ukraine, and said Trump prefers a nuclear deal with Iran.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the US and Europe “belong together" during his remarks at the Munich Security Conference. Addressing the conferencing, Rubio also made clear the Trump administration believes the path forward requires a shift in how the US-European alliance works.

In his address, Rubio highlighted the historical importance of US-European relations, describing the alliance as one that “saved the world" from past threats. He acknowledged that the US can sometimes be “direct and urgent in our counsel" but reassured European leaders that the Trump administration remains committed to the alliance.

While expressing the US’s desire for a strong relationship with Europe, Rubio also noted that the Trump administration believes Europe should take on more responsibility for its own defence against regional threats. “We want allies who can defend themselves so no adversaries will feel inclined to challenge our collective strength," he stated.

Rubio affirmed the US’s commitment to ending Russia’s war in Ukraine but admitted uncertainty about Russia’s willingness to end the conflict. “Something Washington can’t answer, but we are going to continue to test, is an outcome Ukraine can live with and Russia can accept," he added.

In his interview with Bloomberg News, Rubio discussed the possibility of a nuclear deal between the US and Iran, which President Donald Trump favours, though he acknowledged the difficulty of achieving such a deal. Rubio also suggested that regime change in Tehran could be “the best thing that could happen."
