'We're Keeping An Eye On Situation': India On Iran-US Tensions

The remarks came as tensions between Iran and the US have sharply escalated, with reports indicating that Washington could be preparing for possible military action.

India on Friday said it is closely monitoring the evolving situation in Tehran amid escalating tensions between Iran and the US, while remaining in constant touch with Indian nationals in the country.

During a media briefing in New Delhi, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the government is actively tracking developments and maintaining constant contact with the Indian community in Tehran.

“We are keeping an eye on the situation and staying in constant touch with the Indian community living there," Jaiswal said, responding to queries on the worsening Iran-US standoff.

Iran-US Tensions

The statement comes as tensions between Iran and the United States have sharply escalated, with reports indicating that Washington could be preparing for possible military action, subject to a final decision by President Donald Trump.

The US has significantly increased its military footprint in the Middle East in recent days, moving warships, aircraft and additional forces closer to the region amid stalled negotiations over Tehran’s nuclear programme.

The developments follow recent talks in Geneva, which, despite some engagement, failed to yield a breakthrough.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said negotiations had made some progress but stressed that both sides remained “far apart" on key issues.

She warned that Iran should return with concrete proposals, adding that it would be “wise" for Tehran to reach an agreement with the Trump administration.

Trump has also hinted at potential military options, suggesting that the US base at Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean could be used if diplomatic efforts fail.

Meanwhile, international concern over the situation is growing.

Donald Tusk, Prime Minister of Poland, has urged his country’s citizens to leave Iran immediately, warning that conditions could deteriorate rapidly and evacuation windows may close at short notice.

Iran, for its part, has intensified military activity, including naval drills with Russia and live-fire exercises near key shipping lanes, even as the US positioned an aircraft carrier and additional combat aircraft in the region.
