After meetings with Oman and Pakistan leaders during the weekend over Strait of Hormuz, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Monday held talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Araghchi’s visit to Russia, Pakistan and Oman comes as the US President abruptly canceled plans for his top envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to travel to Pakistan for another round of negotiations over the weekend. During the weekend, Araghchi held meeting with key mediators in Pakistan and Oman last weekend.

According to Reuters, Russia has offered to mediate to try to help restore calm to the West Asia following US and Israeli strikes on Iran, which Moscow has condemned. It has also repeatedly offered to store Iran’s enriched uranium as a way of defusing tensions, an offer the US has not taken up.

“For our part, we will do everything that serves your interests and the interests of all the peoples of the region to ensure that peace is achieved as quickly as possible," Putin told Araqchi, according to Russian state media.

“Last week I received a message from Iran’s Supreme Leader. I would like to ask you to convey my most sincere thanks for this and to confirm that Russia, like Iran, intends to continue our strategic relationship," he added.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump is slated to hold a Situation Room meeting with his top national security and foreign policy team on Monday.

CNN quoted sources confirming that the officials will discuss Trump’s options for moving ahead, including whether or not to resume the US bombing campaign that’s on hold after the president extended a ceasefire last week.

Earlier in the day, Araghchi said excessive US demands derailed talks that had shown initial progress. “The US approaches caused the previous round of negotiations… to fail to reach its goals," he said in Saint Petersburg.

Iranian media has reported that Tehran has sent written messages to Washington via Pakistan outlining its “red lines," including positions on nuclear issues and the Strait of Hormuz.
