The phrase “great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation” is one of the central political ideas promoted by Xi Jinping.

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday said China’s “great rejuvenation" and US President Donald Trump’s “Make America Great Again" (MAGA) agenda could move forward together, as the two leaders met during Trump’s visit to Beijing.

Speaking at a state banquet held in honour of Trump and the US delegation, Xi called the visit as “historic" and stressed the importance of stable ties between the world’s two largest economies.

“Achieving the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation and making America great again can totally go hand in hand, help each other succeed, and advance the wellbeing of the whole world," Xi said during his official toast.

Xi added that both countries should become “partners, not rivals", and said China-US relations remain the world’s most important bilateral relationship. Trump is currently on a three-day visit to China.

What Is China’s ‘Great Rejuvenation’?

The phrase “great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation" is one of the central political ideas promoted by Xi Jinping. It broadly refers to China’s goal of restoring its past global influence and becoming a strong, modern and prosperous nation by 2049 — the 100th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.

The slogan was first introduced under former Chinese President Jiang Zemin in 2001, but Xi later turned it into a major national vision linked to what he calls the “Chinese Dream".

Under this vision, China aims to strengthen its economy, military, technology and global standing while improving living standards for its citizens. Chinese leaders often describe the goal as reversing what Beijing calls the country’s “century of humiliation" — a period marked by foreign invasions, colonial influence and internal instability from the 19th to mid-20th century.

Linked To Xi’s ‘Chinese Dream’

Xi has repeatedly used the term to promote national unity and long-term development. The idea is closely tied to China’s push for technological self-reliance, economic growth and greater influence in global affairs.

Chinese officials describe the project as a “Chinese path to modernisation", focused on high-quality growth, reducing inequality and balancing development with environmental protection.

By linking China’s “great rejuvenation" with Trump’s MAGA slogan, Xi appeared to suggest that both countries could pursue their national ambitions without directly clashing with each other.
