A highly contagious stomach virus commonly known as the “vomit bug" is spreading across the United States, with health officials reporting a sharp rise in norovirus activity in several regions of the country.
Norovirus is the leading cause of foodborne illness in the US and is responsible for millions of cases of acute gastroenteritis every year. The virus causes sudden vomiting, diarrhoea, nausea, stomach cramps and, in some cases, fever, headaches and body aches. Symptoms usually appear 12 to 48 hours after exposure and typically last one to three days.
According to data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), norovirus outbreaks have increased significantly compared with the same period in previous years. Wastewater surveillance data has also shown elevated levels of the virus in many states, indicating widespread community transmission.
Health experts say norovirus spreads extremely easily through direct contact with an infected person, contaminated food or water, and surfaces carrying virus particles. The infection can also spread through tiny airborne particles released during vomiting incidents.
Unlike many respiratory viruses, alcohol-based hand sanitisers are less effective against norovirus. The CDC recommends thorough handwashing with soap and water, especially after using the bathroom, changing diapers and before preparing food.
Doctors warn that dehydration remains the biggest risk, particularly for young children, older adults and people with weakened immune systems. While most patients recover without medical treatment, severe cases may require hospitalisation for intravenous fluids.
There is currently no specific antiviral treatment or approved vaccine for norovirus. Treatment mainly focuses on replacing lost fluids and preventing dehydration.
Health authorities have advised people experiencing symptoms to stay home, avoid preparing food for others and disinfect contaminated surfaces with bleach-based cleaners to reduce transmission. Experts say strict hygiene measures remain the most effective way to limit the spread of the virus as cases continue to rise across the US.
