The Soviet Union (now Russia) tested it on 30 October 1961 on Novaya Zemlya Island in the Arctic Ocean. Officially named AN-602, the Tsar Bomba was designed to have a yield of 100 megatons.

However, its yield was limited to approximately 50 megatons during testing to prevent excessive radiation spread. Despite this limitation, the energy released was about 3,800 times more powerful than the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima. The Tsar Bomba was so powerful that it was designed to detonate in the air to reduce the risk on the ground.

The Tsar Bomba has a 50-megaton yield, equivalent to 50 million tons of conventional explosives. For comparison, the bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki during World War II were only 15-21 kilotons. The Tsar Bomba’s test created a five-mile-wide fireball and a mushroom cloud that reached 60 kilometres (37 miles) into the atmosphere.

Everything within a 100-kilometre radius was obliterated, buildings collapsed up to 160 kilometres away, and radiation was detectable up to 275 kilometres away. The explosion produced a bright light visible from 1,000 kilometres away and generated heat capable of causing third-degree burns 100 kilometres from the blast site. The test also released significant amounts of radioactive material into the atmosphere, with long-term environmental impacts.

The Soviet Union’s primary aim in creating the Tsar Bomba was to showcase its nuclear capability to the world, symbolising the nuclear arms race during the Cold War. It also sought to deter potential enemies and demonstrate the nation’s technological prowess. Despite its destructive power, the Tsar Bomba was never intended for practical use due to its enormous size and potential for mass destruction, making it the largest nuclear weapon ever tested and a stark reminder of the destructive capability of nuclear weapons.
