The White House has ruled out the use of nuclear weapons against Iran, even as Donald Trump issued a stark warning that Iran’s “whole civilisation will die tonight" if it fails to meet his Tuesday 8 pm EST deadline for a breakthrough on peace talks, escalating tensions across West Asia.

With uncertainty gripping diplomatic efforts, Trump’s remarks have raised global alarm over Washington’s next move in the region.

Concerns of a possible nuclear escalation grew after JD Vance said the US has “tools in our toolkit that we so far haven’t decided to use" if Iran continues what he termed acts of “economic terrorism."

Vance added that the president has the authority to deploy those tools should Tehran refuse to alter its course.

“The President of the United States can decide to use them, and he will decide to use them if the Iranians don’t change their conduct," he said.

The remarks prompted swift clarification from the White House, which categorically denied any suggestion of nuclear action.

In a strongly worded post on X, the White House dismissed interpretations linking Vance’s comments to nuclear weapons, insisting that no such implication had been made.

Uncertainty Over Peace Talks

As the deadline approaches, it remains unclear whether Washington and Tehran will reach an understanding.

The Wall Street Journal reported that negotiators are increasingly doubtful Iran will agree to reopen the Strait of Hormuz before the cutoff.

At the same time, last-ditch diplomatic efforts are reportedly underway in Pakistan, which is attempting to broker a peace proposal.

However, Reuters cited sources warning that the talks could be jeopardised if Saudi Arabia retaliates militarily, potentially drawing Pakistan into the conflict due to its defence commitments with Riyadh.

Amid reports of diplomatic breakdowns, Iran’s state-run Tehran Times claimed that diplomatic and indirect channels with the United States remain closed, suggesting that avenues for dialogue don’t exist despite the heightened rhetoric.
