Security was tightened around the White House on Saturday night after shots were fired near the presidential complex in Washington, DC.

According to the United States Secret Service, a suspect opened fire at a security checkpoint outside the White House before officers returned fire and shot him. The suspect was taken to hospital, where he later died.

A bystander was also injured in the incident, though no Secret Service agents were hurt.

US President Donald Trump was inside the White House at the time but was “not impacted", officials said.

The shooting took place near the Eisenhower Executive Office Building at 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW. Law enforcement sources said between 15 and 30 shots were fired.
