The White House will review security arrangements after a shooting near a Washington hotel where US President Donald Trump was attending a dinner with senior officials. The move follows a series of recent threats targeting the president.

Chief of Staff Susie Wiles will meet law enforcement and homeland security officials this week to assess safety protocols. A senior official said the focus will be on improving security for events involving the president.

Security Review After Hotel Incident

The incident took place outside the Washington Hilton during the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner. Wiles will meet leaders from the United States Secret Service and the Department of Homeland Security to review “protocol and practices" for major events. Officials said Trump continues to back the Secret Service leadership.

Suspect Arrested After Firing At Checkpoint

Authorities said a 31 year old man from California fired a shotgun at a Secret Service agent at a checkpoint one floor above the ballroom entrance. He was subdued and arrested.

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said Trump and other officials were likely the intended targets. The suspect is expected to face felony charges.

Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were escorted out of the venue.

Series Of Security Threats

This is the third major security incident involving Trump in less than two years. In July 2024 a sniper’s bullet grazed his ear at a rally in Pennsylvania. Two months later agents spotted an armed man near a golf course in Florida where Trump was present.

Security has since been tightened with measures such as bulletproof glass at outdoor events.

Focus On Upcoming Events

The review comes ahead of a busy summer schedule including events for the United States’ 250th anniversary and the football World Cup. Officials said the meeting will assess the response to Saturday’s incident and strengthen future security.

Trump Responds

Trump said the First Lady found the incident distressing but confirmed that official plans will continue. The couple is set to host Britain’s King Charles and Queen Camilla.

Asked if he was satisfied with his protection he said “I’d be up here right now saying they didn’t do their job" adding “Believe me because you know it’s my life"
