Kash Patel Bourbon Controversy: A new report placed Kash Patel at the center of controversy after allegations that he distributed customized bottles of bourbon featuring his name, personal logo and the FBI shield as commemorative gifts to staff and associates.
The Atlantic reported that Kash Patel allegedly handed out bottles of Woodford Reserve bourbon to FBI personnel and civilians on multiple occasions. The publication cited eight people familiar with the matter and said it was also able to purchase one of the bottles through an online auction. The seller reportedly claimed the bottle had been received from Patel during an event in Las Vegas. The report has sparked criticism from some former FBI officials, who questioned whether such gifts were appropriate for the country’s premier federal law enforcement agency.
“Handing out bottles of liquor at the premier law-enforcement agency- it makes me frightened for the country," former FBI supervisory intelligence analyst George Hill told the magazine.
What Is FBI’s Response?
The FBI has strongly pushed back against the allegations and characterization of the report. In a statement to The Independent, FBI Assistant Director for Public Affairs Ben Williamson said the article’s “premise is false and misleading." According to Williamson, commemorative bottles and similar gifts have been part of FBI culture for more than a decade and predate Patel’s tenure as director.

“Senior Bureau officials have long exchanged commemorative items in formal gift settings consistent with ethics rules," he said, adding that Kash Patel follows all applicable ethics guidelines and personally pays for any gifts he distributes.
An FBI official also told The Independent that the customized bottles were created before Kash Patel became FBI director and claimed Kash Patel himself has never consumed any of the bottles.
What Did The Atlantic Report Allege?
The Atlantic report described several incidents involving the customized bourbon bottles. One claim alleged that Kash Patel brought a case of bourbon to an FBI training exercise involving Ultimate Fighting Championship athletes in March. According to the report, one bottle went missing during the event, allegedly causing Kash Patel to become extremely upset.
The article also claimed that a Department of Justice aircraft transported bottles of the bourbon to Italy when Kash Patel traveled to Milan for the Olympics in February.
Why Is Kash Patel Already Facing Scrutiny?
The bourbon controversy comes weeks after another Atlantic report accused Kash Patel of erratic behavior, excessive drinking and being difficult to reach since assuming office. Kash Patel has strongly denied those allegations and has filed a defamation lawsuit against both The Atlantic and reporter Sarah Fitzpatrick.
