Russia and Ukraine traded accusations over ceasefire violations ahead of Moscow’s Victory Day celebrations, even as hopes for a temporary pause in the three-year war faded amid fresh attacks and competing truce proposals.

Russian President Vladimir Putin had announced a unilateral ceasefire from May 8 to May 10 to coincide with Russia’s annual Victory Day parade marking the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany in World War II. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky dismissed the move as symbolic and instead proposed his own pause in fighting starting earlier, on the night of May 5‑6.

Fight Over Ceasefire Dates

The disagreement over dates quickly escalated into fresh violence. On the eve of the proposed truce, Russia launched one of its deadliest aerial assaults of the year on Ukrainian cities, including Zaporizhzhia, killing at least 27 people and injuring dozens, according to reports. Ukraine described the strikes as proof that Moscow was not serious about peace efforts.

Kyiv also accused Russia of continuing drone and missile attacks despite calls for a halt in fighting. Zelensky said Moscow had violated Ukraine’s proposed ceasefire hundreds of times and alleged that the Kremlin was more focused on securing its May 9 parade than ending the conflict.

Russia, meanwhile, claimed Ukraine carried out large-scale drone attacks on Russian territory, including near Moscow and Crimea, ahead of the Victory Day event. Russian officials warned Kyiv against disrupting the parade and threatened strong retaliation if attacks continued.

The tensions have also raised security fears in both capitals. Moscow tightened security measures for the parade, while Russia reportedly warned foreign embassies in Kyiv to evacuate staff amid fears of massive retaliatory strikes.Despite diplomatic messaging from both sides, the latest escalation highlighted the deep mistrust between Moscow and Kyiv, with neither side appearing ready to accept the other’s terms for a ceasefire.
