US President Donald Trump has signalled that he is considering reduction of American troop presence in Italy and Spain amid growing tensions with NATO allies over the Iran war.
While speaking to reporters at the Oval Office, Trump said he was open to reducing troop levels in both countries. “Yeah, probably, I probably will. Why shouldn’t I?" he said, adding sharp criticism of the two allies. “Italy has not been of any help to us and Spain has been horrible, absolutely horrible."
His criticism of Spain and Italy came a day after Trump confirmed that Washington is reviewing its military presence in Germany, where tens of thousands of US troops are stationed. He said that a decision on Germany would be made in a “short period of time."
As of the end of 2025, the United States had around 12,600 troops in Italy, nearly 3,800 in Spain, and over 36,000 in Germany – forming a key part of its long-standing security footprint in Europe.
The Republican leader has been bitterly critical of NATO allies for failing to help with the US-Israeli operation against Iran or with keeping the Strait of Hormuz open for oil tanker traffic.
Spain has emerged as one of Europe’s most outspoken critics of Trump and the Iran war. The country has barred the use of its airspace and the two US bases on its territory for operations supporting the strikes on Iran
Italy, traditionally a close partner, has also come under fire. Trump recently accused Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni of lacking “courage" on Iran, marking a notable shift in tone between the two leaders.
The widening dispute has raised broader questions about the future of the transatlantic alliance, with Trump intensifying criticism of NATO members for what he describes as an overreliance on US military support.
Germany has also been drawn into the row. Chancellor Friedrich Merz recently questioned Washington’s handling of the Iran conflict, prompting Trump to consider reducing troop levels there as well. German officials, however, have downplayed the threat, noting that US bases are strategically vital for both countries.
