Alex Murdaugh, once a powerful lawyer from one of South Carolina’s most influential legal families, is back in the headlines after a court overturned his 2023 murder convictions in the deaths of his wife and son.
The South Carolina Supreme Court ordered a new trial, ruling that jury interference during the original proceedings denied Murdaugh a fair trial.
Here’s a look at who Alex Murdaugh is and why the case became one of America’s most closely watched true-crime scandals.
Who Is Alex Murdaugh?
Murdaugh came from a wealthy and politically connected legal dynasty in South Carolina. For generations, members of the Murdaugh family served as prosecutors in the state’s Lowcountry region and built enormous influence in local legal circles.
Before his downfall, Alex Murdaugh worked as a prominent attorney specialising in personal injury law.
But his reputation collapsed in 2021 after a series of investigations uncovered allegations of financial fraud, corruption and eventually murder.
What Was The Murder Case?
On June 7, 2021, Murdaugh called emergency services claiming he had discovered the bodies of his wife Maggie Murdaugh and younger son Paul Murdaugh near dog kennels at the family’s sprawling hunting estate in Islandton, South Carolina.
Both had been shot multiple times with different weapons.
Initially, Murdaugh claimed he had been visiting his mother around the time of the killings.
However, investigators later said cellphone and video evidence placed him near the crime scene minutes before the murders. A key piece of evidence was a video recovered from Paul Murdaugh’s phone that prosecutors said captured Alex’s voice shortly before the shootings.
Why Prosecutors Said He Killed His Family
During the 2023 trial, prosecutors argued Murdaugh killed his wife and son to distract attention from mounting financial crimes and personal scandals.
At the time, he was accused of stealing millions of dollars from clients, law partners and settlement funds over several years.
The prosecution claimed the murders were an act of desperation as his financial schemes began collapsing around him.
Murdaugh denied killing his wife and son throughout the trial.
Conviction And Life Sentence
After a six-week trial in 2023, Murdaugh was found guilty on two counts of murder and weapons charges.
He was sentenced to two consecutive life terms without parole.
The trial attracted massive global attention, spawning documentaries, podcasts and television specials.
Why The Convictions Were Overturned
In May 2026, the South Carolina Supreme Court unanimously overturned Murdaugh’s murder convictions and ordered a new trial.
The court ruled that former Colleton County clerk Becky Hill improperly influenced jurors during the trial.
Judges said Hill made comments undermining Murdaugh’s credibility and encouraged jurors to closely scrutinise his behaviour while testifying.
The justices described the misconduct as “shocking jury interference."
Will Alex Murdaugh Be Released?
Despite the overturned murder convictions, Murdaugh is not expected to leave prison anytime soon.
He is separately serving lengthy federal and state prison sentences for financial crimes after admitting to stealing nearly $12 million from clients and settlement funds.
Authorities have not yet confirmed when the retrial in the murder case will begin.
