Zoho founder Sridhar Vembu has become part of an online debate after supporting Tulsi Gabbard, US Director of National Intelligence over a social media post about religion. The discussion began after Gabbard shared a Bible verse on X and was criticised for it by far-right activist Laura Loomer.

Loomer questioned why Gabbard, who is known for following Hinduism, was posting Christian scripture online. Her comments quickly led to arguments on social media about religion, identity and whether people from one faith can publicly connect with another religion’s teachings.

Laura Loomer Questions Tulsi Gabbard

The issue started when Laura Loomer reacted to one of Tulsi Gabbard’s Bible-related posts on X. Loomer described Gabbard as a “lifelong Hindu pretending to be Christian", which sparked strong reactions online.

Many users joined the debate, with some defending Gabbard and others arguing that public figures should clearly speak about their religious beliefs.

Gabbard, a former US Congresswoman and current intelligence chief, has openly spoken about her Hindu faith for years. At the same time, she has also shared Christian teachings and Bible verses in speeches and social media posts.

Sridhar Vembu Responds Strongly

Sridhar Vembu publicly defended Gabbard and criticised Loomer’s remarks. He explained that many Hindus respect teachings from different religions and do not see a problem in praying at places of worship from other faiths.

“Laura Loomer appears not to know this, but as a Hindu, the entire Universe, all of it, is the Divine. Going to a Church and praying to Jesus is perfectly fine and I have done it myself on many occasions. I often quote the Bible and my favorite verse is Matthew 25:40 where Jesus says: ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’"

He added, “That is the call to service. What would be a sin for me as a Hindu would be to call what other people hold sacred as “Demonic", which unfortunately a Christian pastor recently did to Hindu deities."

Vembu also said, “That is why Sanatana Dharma is the most tolerant spiritual system in the world. The world needs to understand the eternal Dharma, if we all have to get along."

Social Media Remains Divided

The exchange soon spread across social media platforms, with users sharing mixed opinions on religion and coexistence.

A user wrote, “God is Everything. we, animals, birds, Everything part of God. Each and Every atom is part of it. Sanatan Dharma is one of the best way of life and way of truly understand God and Understand me, where actually no “me"."

Another person commented, “I converted to Hinduism and still pray the rosary every night. For me the Virgin Mary and Devi are the same, she has always watched over me."

Not everyone agreed with Vembu’s comments.

A user asked, “So why didn’t you speak up when Churches were attacked Or the disruptions across India during Christmas last year? Words with no action are just cheap!"

Another person wrote, ““What would be a sin for me as a Hindu would be to call what other people hold sacred as “Demonic"". This is the mindset that got us invaded and colonised."

A different comment read, “>"as a Hindu […] Going to a Church and praying to Jesus is perfectly fine and I have done it myself on many occasions" religious coexistence is possible without religious relativism."
