Fresh tensions emerged in the Gulf on Thursday as the United States warned of sanctions over any attempt by Iran to impose tolls in the Strait of Hormuz, while also cautioning Oman against supporting such a move.
In a post on X, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Washington would take action against “any actors involved – directly or indirectly" in assisting Iran in implementing a tolling mechanism in the crucial maritime route.

He specifically referred to Oman and said the US would “aggressively target" anyone involved in facilitating payments through the strait. “Oman, in particular, should know that the U.S. Treasury will aggressively target any actors involved – directly or indirectly – in facilitating tolls for the Strait and any willing partners will be penalized," he tweeted.
“All nations should reject outright any efforts by Iran to disrupt the free flow of commerce. Tehran’s days of terrorizing the region and the world are over," the tweet further read.
Trump Says Nobody Will Control Hormuz
The warning came after President Donald Trump dismissed reports aired by Iranian state television claiming that Iran and Oman were discussing a joint mechanism to oversee shipping traffic through the strategic waterway.
“Nobody’s going to control it," Trump said during a Cabinet meeting.
“It’s international waters and Oman will behave just like everybody else or we’ll have to blow them up," Trump added.
The White House later called the Iranian media report a “complete fabrication", while Trump reiterated that international navigation through the strait would remain unrestricted.
Iran-US Gulf Tensions Escalate Again
Military tensions also continued in the region. Iran launched attacks targeting a US military base in Kuwait after American forces carried out strikes near Bandar Abbas, which Washington said were aimed at an Iranian drone launch site.
US Central Command said American forces intercepted five Iranian drones and struck a command facility preparing another launch. Kuwait later confirmed intercepting a ballistic missile fired toward the country, while Iran’s Revolutionary Guard warned that any future US strike would trigger a “more decisive response".
