Drone enthusiasts rushed to electronic stores across Beijing to make last-minute purchases earlier this week, fearing their favourite models would soon be taken off the shelves.
The reason? The Chinese capital has turned completely drone-free. Under fresh rules — which came into effect on May 1 — citizens cannot buy, rent, or fly a drone without securing approval within the city’s jurisdiction, CNN reported.
Zoe Zhao, a diehard fan of drones, was left disappointed when she discovered that “many models had been sold out" before she made it to the store, reported the outlet.
Why Beijing Is Suddenly Against Drones
The move aims to “strengthen the management of unmanned aerial vehicles" and “safeguard the security of the capital," CNN quoted municipal authorities as saying.
As per the report, the concerns over flying drones in the Chinese capital stems from not just the spying capabilities of the UAVs but also the lethal potential they possess.
Under fresh regulations, drones and its components cannot be brought into Beijing without approval. Only those who have verified with local police are allowed to carry them.
The Low-Altitude Dilemma
The new restrictions on operating drones in Beijing cast shadow over the country’s low-altitude economy — China’s economic ecosystem driven by advancements in drone technology and the overall concept of Advanced Air Mobility (AAM).
It also adds to the woes of drone enthusiasts in the Chinese capital. Under the new rules, they won’t be able to repair their drones in the city, a store worker told Cover News.
Steven Wang, a university student and a drone enthusiast, told CNN, “I have to apply for permission for each flight, which is very inconvenient".
