Nepal Prime Minister Balendra “Balen" Shah, 35, has listed earnings from digital platforms, including YouTube, TikTok, Facebook, Spotify, iTunes and X, as the main sources of his income, marking an unusual financial disclosure for the country’s top elected leader.

The declaration, made public through the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers, highlights how Shah’s wealth is closely tied to digital content creation and streaming royalties rather than traditional business or property interests.

Such income streams are rare in asset filings by senior politicians in Nepal, where disclosures typically cite real estate, family businesses or inherited assets.

Shah’s background helps explain the atypical profile. Before entering politics, he built a sizeable following as an independent rapper and public figure, a persona he continued to project after assuming office.

On the day he was sworn in, he released a new track titled Jai Mahakali, reinforcing the link between his creative work and public life.

According to the filing, Shah reported bank deposits of about $108,550 (roughly ₹91 lakh), attributed to income from online content and music streaming.

This stands in contrast to his official remuneration as prime minister, around $8,411 annually (about ₹7 lakh), along with a modest monthly expense allowance of approximately $126 (₹10,600).

The disclosure also detailed family assets, with Shah’s wife, Sabina Kafle, declaring gold and silver holdings valued at about $340,147 (₹2.8 crore).

With millions of followers across platforms, 12 lakh subscribers on YouTube, 4.3 lakh on TikTok, 40 lakh on Facebook and five lakh on X, Shah’s filing underscores how digital popularity has translated into a significant revenue stream, setting his financial profile apart from that of more conventional political leaders.
