US Vice President JD Vance's visit to Budapest was widely seen as an American attempt to influence the election in favour of Trump ally Viktor Orban.

The stunning defeat of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban in Sunday’s election dealt a huge blow to the Trump administration, prompting a meme storm targeting US Vice President JD Vance, whose visit to Budapest ahead of the polls was widely seen as an American attempt to meddle in European politics.

Orban, a close ally of Donald Trump and Russia’s Vladimir Putin, was ousted from power after 16 years as voters delivered a strong mandate for a pro-European course led by centre-right challenger Péter Magyar. Orban had been a vocal critic of EU sanctions on Russia and military aid to Ukraine, often frustrating the European bloc by blocking critical policy goals.

The defeat triggered intense criticism and mockery of Vance, who travelled to Budapest on April 7 to openly campaign for Orban just days before the election. In a joint rally, Vance declared that he was there “to help" Orban’s campaign, attacked the EU over “foreign interference" and urged Hungarians to “stand with Viktor Orban."

“We want you to make a decision about your future with no outside forces pressuring you or telling you what to do. I’m not telling you exactly who to vote for but what I am telling you is that the bureaucrats in Brussels, those people should not be listened to," he said.

Anti-MAGA commentator Ron Filipkowski captured some of the Vice-President’s recent misadventures in a viral post. “He campaigns for AfD in Germany – they lose. Invited the Pope to come to US for Trump’s big event – Pope refuses. Leads peace negotiations with Iran – fails miserably. Campaigns in Hungary for Orban – who gets smoked."

“You gotta give him points for consistency. It’s not as easy to be as consistently inept as he makes it look," a user wrote. Another remarked, “Everything he touches dies."

California Governor Gavin Newsom, a fierce Trump rival, said, “JD Vance proves he’s a lightweight twice in 48 hours. Congratulations to the people of Hungary — democracy, free press and human rights win today. There is hope."

Orban, whom Vance had called “one of the only true statesmen in Europe" at last week’s rally, was voted out of office amid anger over corruption, Hungary’s languishing economy, and his close ties to Moscow. Magyar’s victory was hailed by European leaders and Ukraine.
