At least 30 people have been killed and more than 80,000 evacuated in Beijing following days of relentless rainfall that has triggered flash floods, landslides, and widespread destruction across northern China. The downpour, described by authorities as “extreme and continuous," has affected several provinces, including Hebei, Jilin, and Shandong, state media reported on Tuesday.
The highest death toll has been reported in Beijing’s Miyun district, while the Huairou and Fangshan districts have also suffered extensive damage. Roads have been submerged, electricity has been cut in over 130 villages, and rescue teams are working around the clock.
In some areas, military vehicles and ambulances waded through flooded streets while rescuers used crawler lifts to evacuate stranded residents.
President Xi Jinping has urged officials to plan for worst-case scenarios and expedite relocation efforts. The central government has allocated over 500 million yuan ($69 million) in disaster relief to the worst-hit regions, including a dedicated 200 million yuan for the capital.
In nearby Hebei province, a landslide killed four and left eight missing. Flash flood alerts remain in effect for Chengde and surrounding regions. The extreme weather has reignited concerns over China’s vulnerability to climate-driven disasters, with scientists linking such patterns to intensifying global warming. In 2023, similar floods killed more than 80 people across the country, sparking criticism over water diversion decisions made to protect the capital.
