Explosions rocked parts of Abu Dhabi and Dubai near Riyadh after Israel and the US launched strikes on Iran on Saturday. Visuals shared online show a large plume of smoke rising into the sky from the ground.
One person was killed in Abu Dhabi after the United Arab Emirates intercepted missiles fired by Iran, according to a Reuters report. Authorities said the country’s air defence systems successfully stopped several incoming ballistic missiles.
Residents in Dubai also reported hearing a loud explosion, although the exact cause of the noise was not immediately confirmed.
In neighbouring Saudi Arabia, several explosions were heard across the capital, Riyadh, AFP reported. Two correspondents in the city said they heard a loud bang followed by multiple blasts after Iran vowed retaliation over recent attacks by the United States and Israel.
The situation unfolded after Israel and the US carried out strikes on Iran earlier. Following the developments, the UAE temporarily closed its airspace as tensions in the region escalated.
In a statement, the UAE’s Ministry of Defence said the country had been targeted in what it described as a “blatant attack" involving Iranian ballistic missiles. The ministry said the UAE’s air defence systems responded effectively and intercepted several of the missiles.
The UAE strongly condemned the strikes and said the country “reserves its full right to respond", calling the incident a “dangerous escalation". Kuwait also reported engaging incoming missiles on Saturday as the situation in the Gulf region remained tense.
