A humanoid robot outperformed human runners in a half-marathon held in Beijing on April 19. The robot completed the 21-km race in about 50 minutes and 26 seconds, faster than the current human world record timing.

The event, held in Beijing’s E-Town tech hub, saw participation from over 100 robot teams, along with human runners. Interestingly, a remote-controlled robot finished even quicker at around 48 minutes, but it was not declared the winner as the competition favoured autonomous performance.

50:26. Let that sink in — a humanoid just won the Beijing half marathon at a pace faster than the human world record. 🤯The winner, “Lightning" from the Monkey King team, didn’t just finish — it ran a sub-51 minute race, while the human record sits at 56:42.

Organisers said nearly 40% of the robots ran using autonomous navigation, highlighting rapid advances in artificial intelligence and robotics. Notably, this marks a huge improvement from last year, when the fastest robot took over 2 hours and 40 minutes to complete the same race.

Experts say the race was designed to test real-world capabilities such as balance, energy efficiency and navigation in complex environments. The achievement is being seen as a big leap for China’s robotics sector, with many calling it a sign of how quickly machines are catching up with — and in some cases surpassing — human physical performance.

Humans Far Behind As Robot Breaks World Record

The winning humanoid, equipped with an autonomous navigation system and running for Chinese smartphone maker Honour, completed the roughly 21-kilometre course in 50 minutes and 26 seconds, according to state broadcaster CCTV.

That was far faster than the top human in Sunday’s race, while also surpassing the current men’s world record of 57:20 held by Ugandan runner Jacob Kiplimo.

Progress Seen In Robot’s Performance

This victory represented spectacular progress from last year, when robot-runners fell repeatedly and the best took more than two hours and 40 minutes to finish. Also, the participation of humanoids increased from last year’s 20 to more than 100, reported France24, citing organisers.
