If UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer were to step down, Britain would once again find itself in a cycle of rapid leadership turnover- potentially marking its fourth prime minister in just five years and the sixth in the past decade. Such a scenario would continue a trend that began after the relative stability of the David Cameron era and has since been defined by short-lived premierships, internal party upheaval and economic and political crises that have repeatedly forced leaders out of office.

A Decade Of Political Churn

The instability began with David Cameron, who resigned in 2016 after the Brexit referendum, where the UK voted to leave the European Union- a decision he had campaigned against. He was succeeded by Theresa May, who struggled to secure parliamentary backing for her Brexit deal. After repeated failures to pass her agreement through Parliament, she resigned in 2019.

Her successor, Boris Johnson, initially rose on the promise of “getting Brexit done," but his tenure was later engulfed by controversies including the handling of COVID-19 lockdown parties, ministerial resignations and declining party support. He stepped down in 2022 under pressure from his own Conservative Party.

He was followed by Liz Truss, whose premiership became the shortest in British history at just 49 days. Her controversial “mini-budget" triggered financial market turmoil and a collapse in confidence, forcing her resignation. She was succeeded by Rishi Sunak, who stabilised markets and government functioning but led the Conservatives into a period of electoral decline, eventually losing power.

Why UK Keeps Changing Leaders

The repeated turnover has not been caused by a single factor, but by a combination of political shocks: Brexit fundamentally reshaped British politics, creating deep divisions within both major parties and forcing successive leaders to navigate an unresolved national question. Economic pressures- from inflation to public debt- added further strain.

More recently, internal party instability has played a decisive role, with Conservative leadership challenges becoming frequent and increasingly fast-moving. Unlike earlier decades, prime ministers are now more vulnerable to removal from within their own parties rather than through general elections.

A resignation by Keir Starmer would mark a rare moment: a Labour prime minister leaving office outside a general election defeat or normal electoral cycle. In such a scenario, the UK would once again be facing not just a change in leadership, but a deeper question about the stability of its political system.
