Former US Vice President Kamala Harris has strongly criticised US President Donald Trump over the ongoing military confrontation with Iran, alleging that he was “pulled into" the conflict by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and calling the escalation a “feeble attempt" to distract from the “Epstein files".

Speaking at an event hosted by the Michigan Democratic Women’s Caucus in Detroit on Saturday, Harris described the situation as a war “the American people do not want," while questioning the motivations behind the administration’s decision to launch “Operation Epic Fury."

She characterised the move as a political diversion aimed at shifting focus from domestic controversies.

During her address, Harris launched a sharp attack on the Trump administration’s leadership, calling it the “most corrupt, callous and incompetent" administration in the history of the United States.

She criticised Trump’s approach to global affairs, suggesting that the President seeks to project strength through the use of military power.

Harris said Trump aims to “walk around as if he is strong and will use the force of America’s military against anyone whom he chooses."

Harris argued that the administration’s approach represents a major departure from traditional US foreign policy.

She claimed Trump is the “first President of the US of either party since World War II to abandon America’s responsibility to nurture and protect our alliances, our friendships."

She further alleged that the administration has undermined international norms, stating that Trump is the first leader to “not even pretend, and in fact, dismiss the importance of upholding international rules and norms such as sovereignty and territorial integrity."

Harris said such actions have weakened Washington’s global standing, making the United States “unreliable" to its partners and having “robbed whatever influence we had to be able to speak to certain issues."

CRITICISM EXTENDS TO DOMESTIC POLICY ISSUES

In addition to foreign policy concerns, Harris touched upon domestic issues including the economy, healthcare and reproductive rights.

She linked these policy areas to broader concerns about governance and leadership under the current administration.

Turning to electoral politics, Harris expressed confidence in the Democratic Party’s prospects in the upcoming midterm elections scheduled for November, signalling optimism within the party despite ongoing political tensions.

2028 PRESIDENTIAL RUN UNDER CONSIDERATION

Harris’ criticism of Trump comes days after she indicated that she may consider running for president again in 2028.

Speaking at a meeting of the National Action Network, a civil rights organisation founded by Reverend Al Sharpton, Harris had earlier responded to a direct question about her future political plans by saying, “I might, I might. I’m thinking about it, I’m thinking about it," as the crowd at the New York City event cheered.

She added that her decision would depend on evaluating who could do the best job as president “for the American people."

Harris, who served as Vice President under Joe Biden, was the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee in 2024 but lost the election to Trump, who secured victory in both the popular vote and the Electoral College.

According to Reuters, Harris’ potential candidacy in 2028 could face challenges as some voters have indicated in polling that they would prefer new leadership within the Democratic Party following her defeat in 2024.

The National Action Network convention also drew several figures considered potential Democratic contenders, including Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, highlighting early positioning within the party ahead of the next presidential race.
