India is set to host the fourth India-Africa Summit on May 31, in what government officials describe as a “major celebration" of the historic partnership and people-to-people ties between India and the African continent. Senior officials and government sources told CNN-News18 that the summit will focus on expanding long-term development cooperation, trade, technology partnerships and strategic engagement with Africa.

The summit comes amid New Delhi’s renewed push to deepen its footprint across Africa, with officials underlining that India’s worldview of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam"—the world is one family—continues to shape its engagement with African nations. Sources highlighted the “shared history in the fight for freedom" between India and Africa, saying the relationship has evolved into a strong development partnership grounded in “Africa-led and Africa-driven development".

According to officials, India has significantly intensified diplomatic outreach to Africa over the last decade. There have been over 50 high-level outgoing visits from India to African nations and more than 100 visits by African leaders and ministers to India in the past 10 years. India has also expanded its diplomatic footprint on the continent by opening seven new missions during the last decade, taking the total number of Indian missions in Africa to 46.

Officials said India and Africa are pursuing aligned long-term development visions through “India 2047" and the African Union’s “Agenda 2063". India’s engagement with Africa spans Lines of Credit (LOCs), infrastructure and development projects, skilling initiatives, and training programmes for African students and professionals.

Government sources further noted that India has consistently remained among Africa’s top five trading partners and continues to provide duty-free access to least developed countries in Africa. African businesses and sovereign entities are also increasingly investing in India, reflecting a two-way economic partnership.

The next phase of India-Africa collaboration is expected to focus heavily on digital and technology sectors. Officials identified digital public infrastructure, fintech solutions, e-governance, MSMEs, start-up ecosystems, skilling, clean energy and tech partnerships as emerging areas of cooperation.

Security and global governance reforms are also expected to feature prominently during discussions. India has deployed nearly 5,000 UN peacekeepers across different missions in Africa and shares Africa’s position on reforms of global institutions, including the UN Security Council.

Sources pointed to the “Kampala Principles" of 2015 as a guiding framework for India’s Africa policy, focused on building enduring partnerships while aligning with Africa’s own developmental aspirations and growth priorities.

The summit on May 31 will be preceded by a senior officials’ meeting on May 28 and a foreign ministers’ meeting on May 29. India will also organise Track 1 and Track 2 dialogues involving policymakers, experts and stakeholders. Officials said banks, trade bodies and business representatives are also being invited as part of broader efforts to deepen economic and commercial engagement.

Describing the summit as more than just a diplomatic gathering, sources said the event will showcase the “India-Africa connect" and celebrate decades of people-to-people ties between the two sides.
