Iran launched missiles and drones towards Saudi Arabia in the early hours of Tuesday, sparking a massive fire at Al Jubail, the country’s largest industrial hub and home to major petrochemical and energy facilities.

The strike threatened a dire escalation in the already tense US-Israeli war against Iran, with US President Donald Trump threatening to bomb all bridges and electricity-generation plants in the Islamic Republic if Tehran does not relinquish control of the Strait of Hormuz. Iran has also threatened to target energy infrastructure in other countries.

Videos showed an explosion, followed by a massive fire at Saudi Arabia’s Al Jubail industrial hub. The strike is particularly significant as Jubail spans over 1,000 sq km with more than 150 industrial facilities, accounting for roughly 7% to 12% of Saudi GDP and about 50% of total foreign direct investment.

Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Defence said its air defences intercepted and destroyed seven ballistic missiles aimed at the eastern region, where Al Jubail is located. The official spokesperson said there was “interception and destruction of 7 ballistic missiles launched toward the eastern region," adding that debris fell “in the vicinity of energy facilities," with damage assessment still ongoing.

This came as Donald Trump warned of potential strikes on key Iranian infrastructure, including power plants and bridges, if Tehran does not agree to a deal to end its blockade of the Strait of Hormuz by April 7, 8:00 pm ET.

Iran slammed Trump’s “arrogant rhetoric" and urged youths, especially athletes, artists and students, to gather around power plants across the country and form a symbolic “human chain" in protest against Trump’s aggression.

Iran’s weekend strikes on petrochemical facilities in Kuwait, Bahrain and the UAE underscored the country’s ability to fight back despite Trump’s repeated claims to have knocked out its missile and drone capabilities.
