US President Donald Trump broke from a press conference on the ongoing war with Iran to launch a sharp attack on The New York Times, after a reporter from the outlet asked whether his threats to bomb Iranian infrastructure would constitute war crimes under international law. The moment came as Trump was fielding questions when he appeared to bristle the instant he learned which outlet the reporter represented.

“The failing New York Times. Your circulation, way down at The New York Times," Trump interjected, cutting off the question before it was finished. He did eventually address the inquiry, saying he was “not at all" concerned about war crimes allegations and suggesting that disarming Iran took precedence above all other considerations.

Trump then quickly pivoted back to the New York Times, silencing other reporters seeking to follow up.

“Quiet, quiet, quiet, quiet," he said, pointing at journalists with raised hands. Trump zeroed in on the outlet’s 2024 election coverage, claiming it had predicted he would lose before he went on to win every swing state against Democratic nominee Kamala Harris.

“You no longer have credibility at the New York Times," Trump said, adding, “New York Times said, ‘Oh, Trump won’t win the election,’ and I won in a landslide. New York Times has no credibility."

He then continued, “The credibility they have is it used to be ‘all the news that’s fit to print.’ The Old Gray Lady, it was great," referencing the outlet’s famous slogan and longtime nickname.

“But they’re running on past fumes, and you can’t keep doing that. You have to be able to give the correct news, and people like you, who I know, are fake. You’re fake," he said.

The outburst came just a day after the New York Times published a report examining how Trump’s threats to strike Iranian infrastructure could violate international law if carried out.
