A meteor streaking across the skies over Massachusetts triggered loud explosion-like booms and ground shaking across parts of the northeastern United States and Canada on Saturday, prompting hundreds of reports from residents.

According to the American Meteor Society and NASA, the meteor, measuring about 3 feet wide, entered Earth’s atmosphere near the New Hampshire-Massachusetts border at around 2:06 pm local time. Travelling at nearly 75,000 mph (1.2 lakh kmph), it broke apart about 40 miles above the ground, creating a bright daytime fireball and a powerful shockwave.

Witnesses from Delaware to Montreal reported hearing a double boom, feeling buildings shake and spotting the fireball in the sky. Several residents initially feared an explosion or earthquake and alerted local authorities.

NASA estimated that the energy released when the meteor fragmented was equivalent to around 300 tons of TNT. Officials said the object was natural material and not space debris or a satellite re-entry.

The US Geological Survey received numerous “Did You Feel It?" reports and briefly investigated the incident. However, no seismic activity was detected, ruling out an earthquake.

Experts said it is unlikely that the meteor reached the ground. Most of it probably burned up in the atmosphere, while any surviving fragments would likely have fallen into the Atlantic Ocean. No injuries or damage were immediately reported.
