Trump's remarks came as inflation and gas prices rose in the United States due to the ongoing war with Iran, with the Strait of Hormuz effectively closed.

In a significant statement, US President Donald Trump said he does not consider the economic impact the war is having on Americans, and his top priority was stopping Iran from having a nuclear weapon, rather than easing the financial burden on US citizens.
When asked to what extent Americans’ financial conditions were motivating him to strike a deal with Iran, Trump said, “Not even a little bit."
.@POTUS on Iran negotiations: “We’re going to see what happens. We’re only making a good deal… I believe that one way or the other, it’s going to be very good for the American people—and I think actually, very good for the Iranian people." pic.twitter.com/t6y8bCjpk5— Rapid Response 47 (@RapidResponse47) May 12, 2026
“The only thing that matters, when I’m talking about Iran, they can’t have a nuclear weapon. “I don’t think about Americans’ financial situation. I don’t think about anybody. I think about one thing: We cannot let Iran have a nuclear weapon. That’s all. That’s the only thing that motivates me," he said before leaving for a trip to China.
His remarks came as the US-Iran war sparked a global economic crisis, with the recent impasse in peace negotiations beginning to hurt Americans. US inflation rose 3.8% in April from a year earlier, according to the data from the Bureau of Labour Statistics, and gas prices have gone past $4.50 per gallon.
Trump Under Pressure
Trump is under growing pressure from Americans and fellow Republicans who fear economic pain caused by the war could spark a backlash against the party and cost it control of the House of Representatives and possibly the Senate in November, as prices of gas and fertilisers continued to rise with the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
However, the US president insisted that his policies “are working incredibly."
“When this war is over, oil is going to drop, the stock market is going to go through the roof, and truly, I think we’re in the golden age right now. You’re going to see a golden age like we’ve ever seen before," he said.
Trump has sought help from China, a close ally of Iran and the world’s biggest buyer of Iranian oil, to convince Tehran to reopen the strait of Hormuz and end the war. However, he told reporters that he did not “need any help with Iran".
“We have a lot of things to discuss; I wouldn’t say Iran is one of them to be honest with you, because we have Iran very much under control. We’re either going to make a deal or they’re going to be decimated," he added.
