A 46-year-old Malaysian man was arrested by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) while trying to use an illegal sea route to enter the country in an attempt to keep his second marriage a secret from his first wife. Authorities caught him while he was returning home from Indonesia without a passport.

The man, a lorry driver from Perak, told authorities that he had taken the illegal route to visit his pregnant second wife without his first wife’s knowledge, The Star reported.

He said that he could not travel by air because his passport was being held by his first wife.

The father of four said he travelled to Indonesia after learning that his second wife, who is five months pregnant, was in critical condition. He claimed this was his first time entering and leaving the country illegally and that he spent four to five days in Indonesia before attempting the return journey.

“My second wife was pregnant and in critical condition, which is why I decided to take an illegal route to Medan," he said, adding, “I didn’t want my first wife to know about my second marriage. This is the first time I used the back route because she held my passport."

As reported by New Strait Times, on 26 January, the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) detained him alongside 28 undocumented migrants during a special operation off the coast of Sabak Bernam, Selangor.

The man was among two Malaysians and 26 undocumented Indonesian migrants on the first boat, which was operated by a 36-year-old Myanmar national. Those on board included 17 men, nine women and a five-year-old child.

A second boat was intercepted around 2 am, about two nautical miles southwest of the same area. It was carrying 24 undocumented migrants — 19 men, five women and a three-month-old baby girl — and was manned by three Indonesian crew members.

Selangor MMEA director Captain Abdul Muhaimin Muhammad Salleh said that the man admitted that his first wife was unaware of the second marriage. “The man claimed his first wife in Perak was oblivious to his second marriage. He chose the illegal route to ensure his secret remained safe," he said.
